Vietnam defeat Indonesia 5-0 to take bronze at SEA Games

HCMC – The Vietnamese men’s football team ended the SEA Games championship campaign when they thrashed Indonesia 5-0 in the bronze medal game at Singapore’s National Stadium on June 15.

Vietnam’s coach Miura Toshiya made some changes as midfielder Nguyen Huu Dung, who sustained injury in the group stage win over Laos on June 5, was back in the lineup and midfi elder Nguyen Phi Son replaced Nguyen Ngoc Thang from the beginning.

The Vietnamese side launched attacks from the start of the game in search for a goal and Miura’s players dominated ball possession in the first minutes while a shot-looking Indonesia relied on rare counter attacks.

Striker Mac Hong Quan opened for his side with a 13th-minute penalty kick before Vo Huy Toan made a second goal in the 21st and a third in the 40th minute, and Nguyen Huu Dung brought home a fourth goal just before halftime.

Defender Que Ngoc Hai finalized the game at 5-0 in the 71st minute. Earlier, Vietnam’s dream of a first SEA Games title ended after losing 2-1 to Myanmar in the semifinals on Saturday.

Vietnam just grabbed one more silver and four bronze medals on the penultimate day of the 28th SEA Games in Singapore, remaining third with a medals tally of 73 golds, 52 silvers and 60 bronzes.

Thailand remained on top with 93 golds, 83 silvers and 68 bronzes while hosts Singapore came second after taking 83 golds, 73 silvers and 102 bronzes. Malaysia and Indonesia were fourth and fifth with 60 and 45 golds respectively.

The Vietnamese athletes won silver in the women’s volleyball after losing to archrivals Thailand 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 in the final, the eighth consecutive loss to Thailand in the regional Games.

The men’s volleyball team qualified for the final after beating Myanmar 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in the semifinal while Thailand defeated Indonesia 25-18, 25-23, 25-16 in another semifi nal yesterday.

Today, Vietnam will meet powerhouse Th ailand in the men’s volleyball final at 9:00 a.m. at OCBC Arena Hall 2 Stadium.

Earlier, Vu Thi Trang just won bronze in the women’s singles event as she was defeated 21-11, 21-17 by Ongbumrungpan B from Thailand in badminton’s semifinal yesterday.

Le Thi Thu Mai, Ngo Thi Huyen Tran, Nguyen Thi Thi and Tran Thi Diem Trang just bagged bronze for the petanque team after losing 13-5 in the women’s women’s triples event in semifinal.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese sepaktakraw team showed a poor performance as Nguyen Thi Nguyen, Tran Thi Viet My and Hoang Thi Hoa just netted bronze in the women’s doubles category. The Vietnamese side were defeated 21-8, 21-18 in the semifinal.
