Secrets for wise consumers when selecting valuable diamonds
Fake diamonds on the market have eroded the trust of consumers and affected operations of honest enterprises.
The Vietnam jewelry market is becoming more bustling, especially at the year-end shopping season. Diamond, which is considered the king of gems, is always the first choice of many clients.
Given advanced science and technology, aside from natural diamonds, many labs have created diamonds and synthetic diamond-like stones have been introduced to the market. However, some traders have used the products to cheat customers, resulting in heavy losses for buyers of cheap Cubic Zirconia stones (CZ stones) or moissanite gems at high prices.
The problem has affected the diamond market in general and the jewelry market in particular. Meanwhile, it is difficult to tell the difference between authentic and fake products, even with the help of testing machines.
To protect consumer rights, at a workshop on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond issues held on December 15, experts discussed many types of diamond, manufacturing process, properties of lab created diamonds and their impact on the diamond market. Besides, the workshop also introduced machines for distinguishing natural, man-made and fake diamonds.
Mr. Le Huu Hanh, deputy general director of Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company (PNJ), said that the 2015-2016 period has seen many types of lab created diamond products on the market. Many enterprises and customers have brought their products to PNJ Laboratory Company Limited (PNJ Lab) for testing, suggesting that they are worried about the quality of products. The problem has caused unfair competition among businesses, violated consumer rights and obstructed the development of the diamond and diamond jewelry market.
Notably, there are many types of lab created diamonds less than 3 carats each (called small diamonds). These products can be easily mixed with natural diamonds in large batches or at jewelry products. Moreover, the synthetic diamonds are manufactured with high technology, so it is difficult to detect them with ordinary machines and microscopes. Only modern machines worth thousands of U.S. dollars can do it.
Meanwhile, Doan Thi Anh Vu from the University of Sciences Ho Chi Minh City said that a lab created diamond completely has the same physical and chemical composition as a natural diamond. Nonetheless, there must be a clear distinction between lab created and fake diamonds. The lab created diamond is not faked. It is produced at laboratories in a quite short time and its value is only 30% of natural diamond. Therefore, consumers may suffer losses if manufacturers and sellers are equivocal in diamond quality.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, chairman of the Saigon Jewelry Association, said that the mixture of different kinds of small diamonds in the market had eroded the trust of consumers and affected operations of decent enterprises.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dang Ngoc Thao, director of PNJ Laboratory Company Limited (PNJ Lab), recommended customers buy diamond jewelry or diamonds at prestigious stores. In addition, customers should require certificates of natural diamond when buying.
