Binh Thuan turns down titanium mining project
The Saigon Times Daily
HCMC - Binh Thuan Province has written to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proposing suspending a titanium mining project of Quang Minh Investment JSC in Bac Binh District.
The ministry approved the project’s environmental impact assessment report and environmental improvement and recovery plan in November last year. However, the project would overlap a wind park project in a tourism and water sport development zone.
The environmental impact assessment report also mentioned exploiting underground water but the area is dry while surface water and irrigation works are scarce.
Another titanium mining project in Mui Da 2 in Phan Thiet City was put on hold.
Titanium mining can cause water contamination, especially in the dry season, so the province may face severe water and environmental pollution in the long term. Therefore, Binh Thuan announced in July last year that titanium project investors would not be allowed to use water from underground, streams, lakes and ponds because they are main sources for household use, agricultural production, livestock farming and salinity prevention. Investors can only sign contracts with Binh Thuan Irrigation Construction Company to buy water.
