HCMC - The Vietnam Standards and Consumers Association (Vinastas) has been fined VND15 million (US$662.02) and forced to retract all the falsified information it provided for the media to report fish sauce contained arsenic.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vinastas published misleading information on food safety, causing public anxiety and injury for producers of fish sauce.

In October last year Vinastas sparked public concerns by announcing on its website that 101 of the 150 fish sauce samples collected on the market for testing contained arsenic content exceeding the safe level of one milligram per liter. But it did not make clear whether arsenic was in its organic or inorganic form. Arsenic in its organic form can be found in food, including fish sauce, and is not toxic. Meanwhile, arsenic in its inorganic form is harmful to human health.

The association earlier dismissed Vinastas deputy general secretary Vuong Ngoc Tuan in April in the aftermath of the incident.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Industry and Trade coordinated with the Ministries of Health and Science and Technology and the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations to investigate Vinastas’ fish sauce survey results. They found the survey by VINASTAS was not independent, reliable and transparent.
