HCMC – U.S. Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, on May 31 met with Vietnam’s Defense Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich after his arrival in Hanoi.

Lich said the two nations have seen fruitful defense cooperation, including the exchange of delegations at all levels, personnel training, dialogue consultation, maritime security guarantees, search and rescue, bomb and mine clearance, and Agent Orange/dioxin detoxification, reports the Vietnam News Agency.

McCain said he would propose the U.S. Congress and government provide continued assistance for Vietnam to deal with the AO/dioxin-contaminated environment, overcome war consequences, and ensure maritime security and safety.

McCain is expected to visit the USS John S. McCain cruiser which is being maintained at Cam Ranh International Port in Khanh Hoa Province.
