Hoang Phong

The Ministry of Education and Training last Friday announced that all four members of the Vietnamese team attending the 49th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Thailand from July 6 to 15 had won medals, with three gold and one silver, the highest-ever achievement.

In particular, gold medals went to Dinh Quang Hieu, a twelfth-grade student, and Pham Duc Anh, an 11th grader, both from the High School for Gifted Students of Hanoi University of Science under Vietnam National University in Hanoi, and Nguyen Bang Thanh Lam, a twelfth-grade student of Amsterdam High School in Hanoi.

Moreover, Hoang Nghia Tuyen, a 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau Gifted High School in the central province of Nghe An, bagged a silver medal.

This year’s competition attracted the participation of 297 contestants from 76 countries and territories around the world.

Most notably, this is the second consecutive year that Hieu, a 18-year-old student, has achieved the gold medal at the internationally-prestigious chemistry contest, bringing the pride for the country and his family.

Vietnam has joined the International Chemistry Olympiad since 1997 and won one gold and three silvers in 2014, one gold, two silvers and one brone in 2015 and two gold and one silver last year.
