Vietnam version of Broadway classic Chicago comes back in mid-August

The Vietnamese version of Broadway classic Chicago will make a comeback in HCMC in the middle of this month, the Buffalo Theatre Club says in a statement sent to the Daily on August 1. 

The Broadway-style show, directed by Nguyen Khac Duy, one of the founders of the Buffalo Theatre Club, was his final project at the University of Movie and Theater in HCMC.

Chicago won the hearts of the judging panel at the 2013 Young Talent Stage Director Awards and brought Duy a consolation prize.

Created in 1975, Chicago has become one of the longest-ever musicals in Broadway, New York and West End, London. Over the past 30 years, there have been many international versions of Chicago played worldwide. The Buffalo drama club is responsible for making the Vietnamese version of Chicago.

Chicago is a story about night club chanteuse Roxie who kills her lover because of his abuse.  In jail, she meets fellow singer Velma who killed her husband and sister when she saw the two having sex in her house. Velma and Roxie compete with each other to win newspaper headlines, the heart of greedy lawyer Billy Flynn and tabloid editor-in-chief Mary Sunshine in order to get out of prison. As every conflict is performed through songs, their private secrets, ambitions and designs are gradually unveiled.

Established in 2013, the Buffalo Theatre Club supports young actors.

Staged for the first time at the HCMC Drama Theater in 2013, the play is expected to hit the local stage for the second time.

Tickets for the forthcoming show at the Army Theater is located at 140 Cong Hoa Street in Tan Binh District are now available at, with prices ranging from VND199,000 to VND349,000.
