As one of the country’s international-level sport events, the 5th Danang International Marathon took place at Bien Dong Park in the central coastal city of Danang on August 6, following the success of four previous seasons.

This marathon attracted more than 5,000 athletes from different countries and territories to compete in four races: a full marathon (42km), a half marathon (21 km), a 10-km run and a 5-km charity run.

Organized by Pulse Active, a HCMC-based professional organizer of renowned sport events such as HCMC Marathon, Le Fruit Off-Road Triathlon and Color Me Run under the instruction of the government of Danang City and the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the annual event was aimed at boosting the sporty spirit and healthy lifestyle among global citizens apart from promoting the tourism image of Danang City to international tourists.

Furthermore, the marathon was an activity to welcome the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economic leaders’ meeting slated to take place from November 5-11 in Danang City.

The member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

In a statement sent to the Daily, the organizer says this year’s event also included charity activities through donations by participants and benefactors, especially the U.S.-based Silver Strider Club.

All the money raised at the event will be donated to the Danang Association for the Support of Vietnamese Handicapped and Orphans, the Danang Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin, the Village of Hope and 15 low-income families in the central city.

The event was also a great opportunity for participants to explore the landscapes and beaches of Danang City which is in its close proximity to three of Vietnam’s World Heritage sites – the ancient citadel of Hue, the ancient town of Hoi An, and My Son sanctuary.

Held for the first time in 2013, the Danang International Marathon was officially recognized as part of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Japanese marathoners Kentaro Masuda and Kyoko Otsuka won the men’s and women’s  championship titles in last year’s marathon which lured more than 4,500 runners, with 62% of them foreigners.
