HCMC – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on August 10 signed an agreement with Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to grant 1.84 billion yen (VND380 billion) for a flood control project.

The Project for Emergency Reservoir Operation and Effective Flood Management Using Water related Disaster Management Information System will construct hydrological observation facilities to monitor water levels of rivers and dams and rainfalls in Thua Thien-Hue Province and Hanoi City.

Construction will last about 36 months and the Vietnam side will provide VND35 billion for the project.

The project is aimed at minimizing losses of human lives and properties from flooding, and ensuring social stability and economic development by setting up water-related disaster management information systems in emergency situations, especially among vulnerable river areas.

According to MARD statistics, natural disasters last year destroyed nearly 829,000 hectares of rice and other crops, and eroded millions of cubic meters of traffic and irrigation works with damage estimated at VND40 trillion.
