Vietnam wins medals at World Mathematical Olympiad

Vietnamese students attending the final round of the 2017 World Mathematical Olympiad (WMO) in China from August 11 to 12 brought home two silver and seven bronze medals in the individual category, Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper reports. 

To Huynh Phuc and Hoang Duong Phuc Quang, both from Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in HCMC’s District 1, bagged two silver medals.

The seven bronze medals went to Pham Quang Minh, Nguyen Khac Hong Hai, Ho Vu Minh Khang, Nguyen Hoang Phuc, Truong Cong Huy Hoang, Le Nguyen Bao Huy of Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted and Nguyen Cao Minh from Nguyen Hue Secondary School in HCMC’s Tan Phu District.

Regarding the team category, the Vietnam team came in third after China and South Korea at the mathematics contest for elementary and secondary students aged between eight and 13 worldwide.

This year’s competition attracted around 120 students worldwide, including from Vietnam, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and China.

Launched for the first time in 2009, the annual competition serves as an intellectual playground for young mathematical talents to compete.

At the 58th International Math Olympiad in Brazil from July 12 to 23, all six members of the Vietnam team won four gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
