HCMC - Vietnam’s U23 clinched their first victory in the men’s football event at the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) as they thrashed Timor-Leste 4-0 in the opener in Malaysia on August 15.

Five-time silver medalists Vietnam dominated the game from the beginning and scored three goals in the first half, denting Timor-Leste’s chances of seeking any point in Group B, which is described as the “group of death.”

Defender Doan Van Hau was the hero of the day as he scored two goals in the eighth and 41st minutes. Striker Ha Duc Chinh scored in the 20th minute and Nguyen Cong Phuong finalized the game at 4-0 in the 72nd minute.

Vietnam are highly expected to win when they take on Cambodia in their second game on Th ursday.

Vietnam will meet the Philippines on August 20, Indonesia on August 22 and Thailand two days later in their SEA Games campaign.

Defending champions Thailand surprisingly held Indonesia to a 1-1 draw in the Group B match in the same day.

Group B comprises Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Timor-Leste and the Philippines while hosts

Malaysia are in Group A with Laos, Brunei, Singapore and Mya nmar.

The 29th SEA Games will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19 to 31, although the preliminary rounds of men’s football started a few days before the opening ceremony.
