The Saigon Times Foundation (STF) under the Saigon Times Group on September 11 joined hands with Phu Nhuan Jewelry Joint Stock Company (PNJ) to grant 10 scholarships worth VND5 million each to students of Can Tho University.

The scholarship recipients are students of the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources with outstanding academic records but from poor family backgrounds.

Speaking at a scholarship presentation ceremony, La Quan Loi, director of PNJ in the Mekong Delta, said over the years, the firm has carried out community programs such as providing shelters for underprivileged people in the Mekong Delta and granting scholarships to needy primary students.

In the academic year 2017-2018, PNJ plans to set aside VND200 million (US$8,800) to award 40 scholarships to students majoring in environment and natural resources of four universities including Can Tho University, the HCMC University of Technology, Ton Duc Thang University and Nong Lam University.

Recently, STF has teamed up with PNJ to give financial aid to five environment research projects conducted by students from the four above universities.

Since 2012, PNJ has donated a total of VND850 million to support four research projects and present 215 scholarships to high-school and university students in provinces and cities such as Quang Ngai, Can Tho and HCMC, according to STF.

STF is a non-profit organization set up by the Saigon Times Group and its business partners in February 2002 to support education and training in Vietnam. Since then, the STF scholarship program has handed over VND13.7 billion worth of scholarships to 7,100 students nationwide on behalf of individual and institutional benefactors.
