Vietnam suspends biologicals suspected of causing fatal brain disorder

Hoang Nhung

HCMC – The Ministry of Health has suspended the sale and use of some biologicals, especially Human Albumin 20%, as they are suspected of being contaminated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare, degenerative, invariably fatal brain disorder.

Nguyen Tat Dat, deputy head of the Vietnam Drug Administration under the Health Ministry, told the Daily on September 18 that the suspected biological products belong to three batches which were produced by Hungary’s Human BioPlazma Manufacturing and Trading Limited Liability Company and imported into Vietnam by local drug distributor Central Pharmaceutical CPC1 Joint Stock Company.

Human Albumin 20% is a fluid for restoring and maintaining the blood flow when there is a decreased volume of circulating blood in the body, or when it is used as an appropriate kind of medical glue, according to its label indication.

The reason which has led to the suspension is the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam received warnings from Italian and Hungarian authorities that suspected the Hungarian company’s blood- and plasma-based biological products of causing the fatal brain disorder.

The Vietnam Drug Administration also asked medical authorities across the country, especially in Hanoi and HCMC, to strengthen monitoring and deal with possible incidents. In addition, they were told to tighten management and prevent these batches from circulating on the market.
