Hue’s backpacker area becomes pedestrian-only quarter

After several years of preparation, the backpacker area surrounded by Pham Ngu Lao, Chu Van An and Vo Thi Sau streets in the former imperial city of Hue late last week was turned into a square for pedestrians only on three weekend days, Tuoi Tre newspaper reports.

The local government has given the green light to a plan opening food stalls on the sidewalk to serve diverse demands of local and international tourists.

Nguyen Van Thanh, chairman of Hue City, was quoted by local media as saying that the pedestrian quarter will be closed to all vehicles every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., and every Sunday from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. to create open spaces for residents and visitors to walk and admire the beauty of the romantic Huong River at night.

Earlier, Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street along the Huong River in the former imperial capital Hue has been made pedestrian-only.

The city government is pinning high hopes that the newly-launched pedestrian quarter along with Nguyen Dinh Chieu pedestrian road and the pedestrian square on the iconic Truong Tien Bridge would help lure more foreign tourists and boost tourism development, Thanh noted.

Earlier in HCMC, Bui Vien pedestrian-only street in the busy backpacker’s area in District 1 was opened to the public on two weekend nights, featuring a wide range of entertainment shows and dining services.
