Sixth meeting of Party Central Committee begins

The 12th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam opened its sixth plenary meeting in Hanoi yesterday, the Government news website reports. 

The delegates will discuss and give comments on the country’s socio-economic and financial performances in 2017, socio-economic development and budget plans in 2018, healthcare and population issues, administrative reorganization and other crucial issues.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong stressed that the meeting’s contents will directly affect the country’s socio-economic development and political reform in the coming years as well as the lives of people, civil servants and workers nationwide.

Vietnam tourism promoted in Italy

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) in coordination with the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy held a tourism promotion program in Milan and Rome from October 1 to 3, Vietnam News Agency reports.

The event, which is part of VNAT’s national tourism promotion program 2017, introduced the nation, people and landscapes of Vietnam to Italian people, and created a chance for Vietnamese and Italian businesses to meet and seek partners.

Within the framework of the event, deputy director of VNAT Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong met with Italian Deputy Minister of Heritage, Culture and Tourism Dorina Dianchi to discuss specific measures to promote tourism cooperation. The Italian side pledged to assist Vietnam in managing and operating museums.

In 2016, Vietnam welcomed more than 51,000 Italian visitors, up 27.2% year-on-year.

LUii opens contest to honor Vietnamese innovators

Lund University Internet Institute (LUii) in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Vietnam and the Vietnam Program for Internet and Society will organize the #InnovationForGood contest to honor one enterprise or individual from Vietnam for their work in social innovation in a digital context.

The award carries a cash prize of US$1,000 plus a trip to Sweden to experience the Swedish innovations. It will recognize innovators who have created platforms at the intersection of technology, media and social good. The prize ceremony will be held in Hanoi on November 27 during the Vietnam Internet Forum 2017.

Contestants are advised to send in entries to andreas.mattsson@kom.lu.se with an essay of up to 1,000 words on how their ventures fit in the idea of social innovation in a digital context, the human rights aspect that it is targeting and the expected outcome before November 1, 2017.

Second turbine of Vinh Tan 4 commissioned

The second turbine of the Vinh Tan 4 thermal power plant was commissioned and generated power to the national grid on October 3, nearly three months after the launch of the first one, Electricity Vietnam Group (EVN) announced.

According to Nhan Dan newspaper, the turbine is scheduled for commercial operation on June 2018.

Vinh Tan 4 thermal power plant, developed by EVN, has two turbines with a capacity of 600 MW each. With total investment of more than VND36 trillion (over US$1.58 billion), the thermal power plant is expected to generate about 7.2 billion kWh each year.

Vietnamese American killed in Las Vegas massacre

Michelle Vo, a Vietnamese American woman, was among the 59 people who were killed during the mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday night, Tuoi Tre newspaper reports.

The 32-year-old previously worked as an administrative assistant in Mountain View before moving to Southern California to work for NYLIFE Securities LLC.

With nearly 600 people injured and dead, the mass shooting in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is the deadliest in the U.S. history. At least 45 people are still in critical condition.
