A scene of the French opera “Frédégonde” by world-renowned composer Camille Saint-Saens. Despite heavy rain, a lot of local and foreign spectators still came to the Opera House in District 1, HCMC to watch the fascinating show on the nights of October 20 and 21 to learn about the French history and culture. The French work was introduced to the Vietnamese audience for the first time since it made its first public appearance in 1895 in Paris. This is the only French opera completed on Con Dao Island off mainland Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam.

Popular artists from HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) and France’s La Fabrique Opera showed their great excitement and enthusiasm to revive the French opera and walk the audience through a fantastic journey depicting the French historical period with severe royal power conflicts and understand how Frédégonde from a serving woman could win the King Chilperic 1’s heart and acquire the position as the rich and powerful queen of France.

The show, under the patronage of the Consulate General of France in HCMC and with the support of the French Institute in Vietnam, was a special historical and cultural event. This was also obvious evidence of the growing and fruitful relationship in culture and art between Vietnam and France over the years. NEWS: HOANG PHONG
