UPS Foundation, a charitable arm of global logistics service provider UPS, on Tuesday donated 800 standard helmets to school children of Tran Van On Primary School in HCMC’s District 12 and helped raise their knowledge on traffic safety.

As part of the “Safety Delivered” project, the event attracted the participation of more than 800 students and teachers of the school.

Eduardo Martinez, president of UPS Foundation, said in a statement that the project is meant to minimize fatalities and deaths caused by traffic accidents.

Pham Thuy Liem, a representative of District 12’s division of education and training, said traffic accidents are the leading cause of deaths among children aged between 5 and 14 around the world and cause heavy human and economic losses.

Greig Craft, president of the AIP Foundation as a stakeholder in many traffic safety programs in Vietnam, explained that it is essential to call for the participation of the community, including young people, in raising public awareness of traffic safety.

The project has been implemented in four Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, focusing on teaching traffic safety for students in schools, donating helmets to primary students and launching a campaign to raise public awareness of traffic safety.

In the next two years, the project is expected to hand over 17,000 helmets to children in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar, with 9,000 of them to be given in HCMC and Hanoi.
