Over 200 locals and foreigners on Saturday morning joined the Blood Donation Day at the Saigon Times Group office in District 1, HCMC to lend a hand to saving lives of patients in need of help.

Sponsored by Phu Gia An Co., a property development affiliate of Hung Loc Phat Co., the event marked the 26th anniversary of The Saigon Times Weekly and the 22nd anniversary of The Saigon Times Daily.

Organized by the two English-language publications of the Saigon Times Group and the Blood Donation Center of Vietnam Red Cross in HCMC, this year’s event attracted foreign diplomats, staff of local businesses, students, civil servants, and Saigon Times Group staff.

Home Credit, one of the first finance companies to operate in Vietnam, sent up to 90 of its staff to the Blood Donation Day, followed by PepsiCo Vietnam with 30 people, and DXC Vietnam with 20.

In an interview with the Daily, Consul General of France in HCMC Vincent Floreani shared joy to join the blood donation program, saying the meaningful social activity had shown great effort by many people to make a practical contribution to improving the health of the Vietnamese. Floreani, who is new in HCMC, said this was his third blood donation.

Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, Consul General of India in HCMC, who is also new in the city, said he had earlier given blood, so he wanted to do the same here in the city to contribute something to the community.

Tran Duy Tien, general director of Phu Gia An Co., a property development affiliate of Hung Loc Phat Co., which sponsored the event, also stressed the significance of the social program. “Apart from business activities in the field of property, our company has paid much attention to social activities as part of its business development strategy to bring a better life to the local community.”

Hospitals around the country are in dire need of blood to save lives of thousands of patients a day, and the annual activity of the Saigon Times Group would be a significant contribution to this noble cause, as it helps save lives of many poor patients and share the burden with the society, Tien added.

Mark Gillin, a 53-year-old American blood donor, says he is pleased to participate as he wants to make something meaningful to the local community. The goodwill event should be held on a frequent basis in the coming time, he proposed.

“Donating blood to support disadvantaged patients is a practical and humanitarian activity. I’m willing to contribute my blood to save people in need of help, and this Blood Donation Day is really a good chance for us to join hands with the Saigon Times Group and the Red Cross to show responsibility and care for the community,” said a 28-year-old staff of HomeCredit.

Nguyen Hoang Truc My, a third-year student from HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities, explained to the Daily that she got the news about the event via the Saigon Times Facebook page, and she feels happy to contribute something to society.

She hoped this humanitarian activity would attract more young people, especially college students with full enthusiasm for community activities in the coming time.
