Minister: Social media rife with harmful information

HANOI – Though social media is beneficial for many users, it is also used as a tool to defame people, invade privacy, incite violence, disseminate pornography, and sow racial and religious divisions, said Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan.

Social media has grown rapidly in Vietnam. “We cannot deny the upsides of social media in particular and the Internet in general. No one can go against this trend,” Tuan told the NA at the Q&A session last week.

However, social media is also taken advantage of to do harm, he said in response to National Assembly (NA) deputies’ questions about misleading and inaccurate information on social media.

There are around 53 million Facebook users in Vietnam. Nonetheless, Facebook is used to stage smear campaigns against certain people. At least five people have been killed by offensive information on social media since 2014, according to the minister.

Vietnam has more than 300 local social networks but few use them. Most Vietnamese prefer foreign ones, particularly Facebook and Google, as these networks offer a lot of services.

“We have worked with foreign social networks. They have complied with international law but when they offer services in Vietnam, they must respect Vietnamese law,” Tuan said.

He noted nearly 5,000 YouTube video clips against the Party, the State, and individuals have been removed.
