Sapa resort town recognized as national tourism site

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has signed a decision acknowledging Sapa Town in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai as a national tourism site, the Government news website reports.

The provincial government of Lao Cai is responsible for cooperating with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and relevant ministries and sectors to host a ceremony to announce the decision with an aim to promote the tourism image of Sapa to local and international tourists.

Data from the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism showed that around 2.3 million tourists visit the province in the first quarter of 2017 with nearly 416,000 foreign tourist arrivals, a year-on-year pickup of 77 %.
The province is pinning high hopes to lure more than 4.5 million tourists in the National Tourism Year of 2017, and become a key tourism center of the northwestern region by 2020.

In related news, a winter festival will take place in Sapa from December 23, the Government news website quotes a source from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).

One of the highlights of the festival is a fire dance performance by Red Dao ethnic minority people. This year marks the second time the district hosts the festival with a variety of cultural and entertainment activities highlighting unique cultural traits of ethnic minority groups.
