15 imprisoned for plotting to blow up TSN airport

The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC - The People’s Court in HCMC on December 27 sentenced 15 people to multiple years in prison for plotting to bomb the city’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Phap Luat newspaper reports.

The 15 plotters were charged with terrorism, a crime punishable by death in Vietnam.

Dang Hoang Thien, accused of making petrol bombs meant to explode the airport and earlier setting fire to a parking lot managed by police in the southern province of Dong Nai, was jailed for 16 years. In the arsonist case, hundreds of motorcycles were destroyed.

Police foiled the bombing plot after passengers at the airport detected strange boxes which were later found to consist of explosive devices.

Nguyen Duc Sinh, the mastermind behind the bombing plot and the one who directly set the parking lot ablaze, was handed 10 years behind bars.

Other defendants were given jail terms from five to 14 years.

Particularly, Le Thi Thu Phuong, Thien’s girlfriend, was sentenced to one year and a half in probation for failing to report the crime.

According to the court indictment, the team acted on instructions from an overseas group headed by Dao Minh Quan and Pham Lisa.
