Around 100 school children aged between six and 15 in HCMC on Sunday joined a painting contest at the HCMC General Sciences Library in District 1, HCMC in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Vietnam (1973-2018).

Organized by the HCMC Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) in conjunction with the Singaporean Consulate General in HCMC and the Vietnam – Singapore Friendship Association, the painting contest gained much attention and applause from the public as it provides an opportunity for children to show their creativity and use paintings as a means to express their future hopes for the relationship of the two countries.

Speaking to The Saigon Times Daily on Sunday morning, Singapore’s Consul General in HCMC Leow Siu Lin said the competition with its theme “Vietnam-Singapore Friendship” was the first among a series of events in 2018 to mark the remarkable milestone of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The long-standing friendship and relationship between Vietnam and Singapore, Leow said, can be obviously witnessed in various fields like economy, politics, education, science and technology, especially when Singapore is now the largest foreign investor in HCMC and the third in Vietnam after Japan and South Korea.

This year, the Singapore consulate general is rolling up its sleeves to organize numerous activities such as academic contests and food festivals to boost cultural exchanges and bolster the solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Singapore.

Le Ho Thuy Van, a 33-year-old office staff in HCMC’s District 3, told the Daily that she was proud of her eight-year-old daughter who was for the first time chosen to participate in a painting contest in celebration of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Singapore.

“Painting is one of the best ways to assist kids to find some relaxing moments after stressful school hours and develop their creativity. I always encourage my daughter to take painting courses aside from formal and after-school classes to develop her creativity,” Van added.

The two-hour painting contest attracts nearly 100 school children in HCMC
