HCMC gives temporary permission for use of sidewalks

The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC – The HCMC government will temporarily allow vendors and businesses to use sidewalks provided that they ensure traffic safety and manage such sidewalks well, news website Vietnamnet cited HCMC vice chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen as saying.

At a conference on traffic safety on January 10, Tuyen said the city would have to relax its regulations on sidewalk management although sidewalks should be for pedestrians only.

He said sidewalk management is a complicated issue as sidewalks are what many entities want to use for commercial purposes.

At the conference, the HCMC Traffic Safety Committee also gave a review of traffic safety in the city.

Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, deputy head of the HCMC Traffic Safety Committee, said there were more than 4,000 traffic accidents in the city last year, killing 717 people and injuring 3,000 others. The number of accidents increased by 39 cases over 2016 but the number of fatalities fell by 84.

In addition, the city saw nine traffic congestion cases lasting over an hour and 17 traffic accident hotspots.

Regarding missions for this year, Tuong said the city will focus on children protection and reduce road accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10%.

He proposed building special parks to educate children on traffic knowledge.
