Quang Nam calls for U.S. investment in Chu Lai Airport

HCMC – Le Tri Thanh, vice chairman of the central province of Quang Nam, called for U.S. firms to invest in Chu Lai Airport which is set to be a large-scale international transport and aviation service center by 2030, heard the “Meet the USA” conference in Danang City.

The conference was jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danang City authorities and the U.S. Embassy on the occasion of the visit to Danang by the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, with the participation of leaders of seven central provinces, including Quang Nam.

Chu Lai Airport was built by the U.S. before 1975 and was closed after the Vietnam War. The airport was reopened in 2004 and it has been capable of receiving large aircraft since 2015, according to Lao Dong newspaper.

The number of passengers traveling to and from Chu Lai Airport surged from 155,000 in 2015 to 680,000 in 2017.

The Government has approved a plan to develop the airport into an international transport and aviation service center, with an annual capacity of five million passengers and five million tons of cargo by 2030.

Notably, when the Blue Whale gas project invested by America’s Exxon Mobil becomes operational, the airport would be busier as logistics in Quang Nam Province further grows.
