Stocks advance for third straight day

HCMC – Profit takers turned active as the VN-Index approached the 1,140-point level on March 14, but some large caps still kept the market afloat for the third consecutive session.

Given 147 rising stocks and 142 others closing in the red, the main index added a slight 4.78 points, or 0.42%, at 1,138.09. The HCMC market saw 250.5 million shares worth VND7.1 trillion changing hands, up 7.4% and 3% versus the previous day respectively.

The banking stock STB fell 0.3% at VND16,050 per share with foreigners net selling over one million shares. However, the stock still took the lead for liquidity with 16.4 million shares traded.

CTG also lost 0.4% at VND35,550 per share after its positive rally on Tuesday. BID declined 0.5% at VND39,000 a share on volume of two million shares.

Among large caps, property firm VIC dropped 0.1% at VND102,500 per share and SAB slid 1.1% at VND214,600 a share. Meanwhile, lender VCB gained 2.5% at VND73,800 per share and dairy giant VNM increased 1.4% at VND213,000 per share.

Some lenders like VPB and MBB managed slight rises on strong turnover. Notably, having traded sideways for five consecutive days, HDB jumped 4% at VND44,000 a share on volume of nearly six million shares, although foreigners net sold nearly 2.3 million shares of the lender.

Sugar firm SBT kept soaring for the second day, closing at the intraday high of VND19,300 per share, up 6.3% versus the session earlier.

Among property firms, HAG and FLC saw active trading with around 10 million exchanged each. The two stocks increased 3.6% and 1.2% at VND7,410 and VND5,870 a share respectively.

IDI, which is active in the consumer goods sector, dipped 4.6% at VND15,400 per share given strong selling pressure. Seafood enterprise ASM, meanwhile, climbed 4.6% at VND11,300 a share on volume of 5.9 million shares.

The northern market’s HNX-Index advanced 0.59% at 130.43, buoyed by securities and insurance stocks. The bourse saw 76.9 million shares worth VND1.2 trillion exchanged, up 37.5% and 23% versus Tuesday respectively.

Insurance firm PVI was the key market driver for surging 9.6% at VND42,300 per share. It reported matching volume of 1.67 million shares.

Lender SHB was the most actively traded stock with 34.4 million shares changing hands, rising 2.3% at VND13,000 per share. Its fellow bank ACB closed at the reference price of VND49,200 a share on volume of 2.9 million shares.
