Van Don airport planning adjusted to receive bigger aircraft

HCMC - The Ministry of Transport has announced adjustments to the planning for Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh until 2030 so that the airport could receive bigger aircraft.

A 3.6-kilometer runway would be built to serve B777, B787, B747-400, A350 and equivalent aircraft by 2020, instead of a runway of three kilometers as envisaged in the old plan.

Besides, the airport will have at least six aircraft parking slots to annually serve 2-2.5 million passengers by 2020. The figures will be 12 aircraft parking slots and five million passengers by 2030.

Van Don International Airport is expected to be put into service this year. The project developed by Sun Group requires an investment of nearly VND7.5 trillion (US$329.39 million).

This is the first airport in Vietnam to be implemented under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) format with 45 years needed to recover investment capital.

According to a schedule approved in 2012, the airport would have a three-kilometer runway, an aircraft parking space for four planes and a passenger terminal with a designed capacity of two million passengers a year.

After the Government decided to develop Van Don into a special economic zone, the investor proposed prolonging the runway by 600 meters to receive larger aircraft.
