HCMC – Authorities have found a hole at the bottom of an express boat with 42 passengers on board which sank on Sunday en route from the coastal city of Vung Tau to HCMC’s Can Gio District, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reports.

Earlier they also discovered the propeller shaft had broken, causing water to leak into the engine cabin of the boat. Authorities confirmed with Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on April 9 that the propeller shaft was found broken.

The boat, owned by Greenlines DP Technology Co Ltd, sank just 300 meters off Tac Suat ferry terminal in the district. All passengers and their belongings were safely brought ashore.

The boat reportedly struck something on the riverbed before it partially sank. It was salvaged at 10:10 p.m. on the same day.

The company’s director, Tran Song Hai, said the company had suspended three other boats similar to the one that sank.

However, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the incident, said the director, adding the hole had been sealed for investigation.

Tran Quang Lam, deputy director of the HCMC Transport Department, ordered regular checks of passenger boats following the incident.

In 2013, a motorboat from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang with 30 passengers on board sank off Can Gio District, leaving nine people dead.
