GIO LAO 2018 is a group of 10 artists born in the 80s who grew up in the same region characterized by gio Lao (Vietnamese name for Foehn wind) and all studied at Hue University of Fine Arts. This is the group’s third exhibition together and their first time displaying their works at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

The exhibition will be opened to visitors from June 16 to 20 with free entry, according to the museum’s website. The group’s first and second exhibitions were held at Tu Do Gallery in HCMC on Jun 7, 2014 and at the HCMC Museum of Fine Arts on May 6, 2017 respectively.

The trademarks of GIO LAO 2018 include consistent themes such as self-portrait with the works by Quynh Na and Tran Huu Nhat, and the ancient yet modern cultural and architectural identity of Hue Citadel, post-war life, religions, beliefs and political factors in the works by Nguyen Dinh Viet, Nguyen Van He, Nguyen Hoang Trang, Tran The Vinh, Tran Ngoc Bay, Vu Duy Tam, Ho Hung and Nguyen An.

In particular, this exhibition features a sculpture and an installation artwork by Nguyen An and Nguyen Van He, while the rest are paintings in acrylic, watercolor or oil on canvas with a visual language emphasizing on personal emotions, edgy monologues, the exploration of one’s destiny in the modern age, our living space, the heritage of Hue Citadel, and nature in central Vietnam with its miraculous tropical breeze.
