HCMC – The HCMC Department of Science and Technology last Saturday signed a cooperation agreement with South Korea’s EDODIGM Co. to build wastewater treatment facilities at hospitals in the city.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Nguyen Phuoc Dan, dean of the environment department of HCMC University of Technology, said the trial operation of EDODIGM’s technology at Hospital for Tropical Diseases had produced good results.

Treated wastewater met environmental standards as the proportion of nitrogen in treated wastewater was eliminated. Besides, the use of sedimentation and compressed air tanks reduced over 80% of the amount of electricity consumed compared to traditional methods.

Nguyen Khac Thanh, deputy director of the Department of Science and Technology, told the Daily that operating the system was not complicated, so hospitals could use it on their own.

Due to lack of technology, the treatment of hospital wastewater has not met the standards, Thanh said. Therefore, he added, a suitable technology for this will help reduce environment pollution in the city.

According to the Department of Health, the city has 113 hospitals, with 50% of them having poor wastewater treatment facilities. Some 322 clinics and 285 private medical centers in the city’s 24 districts are not yet equipped with wastewater treatment systems.
