HCMC – All the recycling factories in HCMC will be moved to Da Phuoc Solid Waste Treatment Complex in the outlying district of Binh Chanh, said the HCMC Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The city now has over 1,000 outdated waste recycling plants mingled in residential areas, said Nguyen Trung Viet, director of the department’s Office of Solid Waste Management.

Viet said the relocation would be done by 2015 and that part of the environmental protection fee collections would be used to finance construction of new garbage recycling facilities.

The city discharges about 9,000 tons of waste a day, of which just 6,700 tons is buried and the remainder recycled.

In addition, the city has 1,500-2,000 tons of industrial and toxic waste recycled each day using old technology, thus doing harm to the environment.

The city authorities have set a target of reducing the ratio of buried waste to 40% by 2015 and calling for investments in environmentally friendly waste treatment facilities.
