Saigon Port given assistance to control environment

By Thu Nguyet - The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC - ASEAN Ports Association (APA) and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) have offered technical assistance to Saigon Port to improve the quality, efficiency and sustainability in environmental and safety management, said an official in Saigon Port on Tuesday.

NVị trí đặt quảng cáoguyen Hoang Dung in charge of Saigon Port’s investment projects told the Daily that APA announced the offered assistance in a meeting hosted by the Port Authority of Thailand in Bangkok last week.

“They are supporting some ports of Thailand and the Philippines, and they want to cooperate with Vietnam. They’ll implement the assistance only when Saigon Port agrees to join the project with certain commitments,” he added.

He did not elaborate on such commitments.

This technical assistance if approved will be part of a larger project that APA and GTZ are implementing to assist some selected ports in ASEAN to comply with international environmental and safety standards for sustainable development, said the Vietnam News Agency.

The three-year project called “Sustainable Port Development in the ASEAN Region” is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. APA and GTZ will work with each participating ports to address their needs and assist them to improve their safety and environment management. Nine selected ports in five ASEAN countries include two ports in Cambodia, two in Indonesia, two in the Philippines, two in Thailand, and Vietnam’s Saigon Port.
