Two Co.opMart supermarkets, one Co.op Food store online

HCMC - Saigon Co.op, operator of the Co.opMart supermarket chain, last week inaugurated a new store in the city and will open another in Hanoi on Wednesday, bringing the total nationwide to 44.

Saigon Co.op has invested VND50 billion in the 6,500-square-meter store. The new store includes an entertainment area, fashion stores, a fast food joint and a restaurant.

Co.opMart Saigon in Hanoi will cover 7,500 square meters and include a bookstore, game area, entertainment center and restaurant. The VND74-billion store is located at Km 10 Nguyen Trai Street, Mo Lao Ward, Ha Dong District in the capital. This is also the first supermarket of Saigon Co.op in Hanoi.

Saigon Co.op last week also opened its ninth convenience food store in HCMC.
The new Co.op Food store is located at 405 Hoang Van Thu Street, Tan Binh District.

Open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, the new store stocks a wide range of fresh, processed, semi-processed, cooked and frozen foods.

The country’s leading retail chain store operator is also continuing to expand its supermarket and convenience food store chains nationwide. It plans to increase the number of supermarkets from the current 44 to at least 52 by the end of the year, and that of newly established food stores from the current eight to 20, said Nguyen Thi Hanh, general director of Saigon Co.op.

Hanh said the company targeted to open ten new supermarkets this year, with the first already launched earlier in the year in the central city of Danang. Other supermarkets will be opened in HCMC, Phu Tho, Hanoi, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Soc Trang, Binh Duong and Nha Trang.

In the medium term, it targets to scale up the number of its supermarkets to 100 by 2015, besides opening 12 more convenience food stores in HCMC, she said.

On the occasion, Saigon Co.op today will launch a sales promotion program to reduce prices of 1,400 items by up to 50%. The program will run until May 2.

Saigon Co-op obtained over VND8.57 trillion in revenue last year, up 35% on 2008, with the Co.opMart chain contributing over VND8.3 trillion, or 96.9%. It expects revenue this year to rise 34% to VND11.5 trillion.
