Film shows Vietnamese community’s struggle after Hurricane Katrina

By Thoa Nguyen in Hanoi

A film about a Vietnamese community that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina will screen in Hanoi on Saturday.

“A village called Versailles” by director S. Leo Chiang is a documentary film about Versailles, a residential community in the west of New Orleans that is home to many refugees from Vietnam.

After Hurricane Katrina, Versailles was badly damaged and under threat from toxins seeping from two nearby government garbage dumps.

The film tells how the people turned a disaster into a chance for a better future.

At the end of the film, the audience can talk with producer Brittney Shepherd.

The film will be screened in both Vietnamese and English at the Goethe Institute at 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street in Hanoi on August 21.
