Dido and Aeneas make history in Saigon

Last week’s performance of Dido and Aeneas was above all else a historic occasion. It was the first almost fully-staged opera production in Saigon in modern times. That the HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera’s brave venture went off without a hitch, and was frequently both elegant and beautiful, was almost beside the point. More important was that the many patrons who came to Saigon’s resplendent Opera House will in future years be able to say with pride “I was there.”
