HCMC – Up to 90% of advertising equipment in use in Vietnam is imported from foreign countries, mostly China, said Nguyen Thanh Dao, director of Dong Nam Advertising and Commercial Promotion JSC.
Dao was speaking with the Daily on the sidelines of the first Vietnam International Advertising Equipment and Technology Exhibition, or VietAd, which opened at Phu Tho Indoor Stadium in HCMC’s District 11 on Thursday.
The chairman of the Vietnam Advertising Association, Dinh Quang Ngu, had the same view as Dao’s, saying at the opening ceremony, “Vietnam’s advertising industry is still in its infancy. Machinery, equipment and materials that are used for the advertising industry lag far behind other developed countries.”
The advertising industry is heavily dependent on imports, he added.
Dao said creative ideas and advertising services were also inferior to those in other countries. This explains why “foreign advertising companies are dominating nearly 80% of the local advertising market,” he said.
There are more than 5,000 companies operational in many ad-related fields, such as strategic consultancy, advertising services, outdoor billboarding, video clip production, graphic designs, printing, design, exhibition and event services.
According to a report by the Vietnam Advertising Association, the advertising industry’s annual revenue is estimated to hover around US$1 billion.
VietAd 2010 features 150 booths of nearly 70 domestic and foreign advertising enterprises to exhibit machinery and equipment in printing, LED equipment and technology, display and advertising systems, advertising products, gifts, materials and services.
