Eight Vietnamese students have just earned the 2010 Singapore scholarships, with four from Hanoi and another four from HCMC, to study for a three or four-year undergraduate degree at a university in Singapore, starting in July or August. Their choices are the National University of Singapore, the Singapore Nanyang Technological University or the Singapore Management University.
The scholarship, fully funded by Singapore’s Government, will cover the tuition fee, return airfares and annual living allowance. The total value of the eight scholarships is US$904,000 or an average of US$113,000 each.
Singapore’s Ambassador to Vietnam Simon Wong presented the scholarships to the students in Hanoi and Singapore’s Consul General in HCMC Pong Kok Tian handed them to the students in HCMC on Wednesday. Recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership qualities and potential to contribute to their country’s development.
“The selection process is therefore rigorous and competition extremely keen,” said Pong Kok Tian in his
remarks at the ceremony held
on Wednesday in HCMC.
Launched in 1998 by the then Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, the objective of the Singapore Scholarships is to offer undergraduate scholarships to students in ASEAN countries. Since its inception, it has awarded scholarships to 163 students, including the eight selected this year. The scholarship recipients can choose their major from a wide range of studies, including Business Administration, Accountancy, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering.
