City students at Bahasa language contest

By Kieu Giang in HCMC

The Indonesian consulate general in HCMC has joined up with the Indonesian Study Program of the Oriental Faculty of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in HCMC to launch the first Bahasa Indonesia speech and writing competition.

The writing contest was held last week while the speaking challenge will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Indonesian consulate general at 18 Phung Khac Khoan Street in District 1. Both events are to mark the 67th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia after 350 years of Dutch rule.

The competition aims to improve students’ knowledge of the language and it is a meeting point for new friendships between recipients of the scholarship program.

Fifty people have registered for the competition which is divided into two groups. The first group is made up of Vietnamese students who are still attending the Study Program of Bahasa Indonesia and the other consists of recipients of Darmasiswa scholarship, Indonesian Art and Cultural program and master program of Developing Countries Partnership from the Government of Indonesia.

There are now three universities teaching Bahasa Indonesia in HCMC, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Open University and Hong Bang University International with 100 students in total. Up to now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has had nine batches of students majoring in Bahasa Indonesia.
