Art dolls, a genre of dolls in a context, such as painting or story, are new to the Vietnamese, and artist Tran Thu Hang is one of the rare doll artists of Vietnam. A self-directed artist, Hang started making art dolls when she was in university.
Wood is Hang’s main material, as “Wood is really miraculous, simple and plain.”
Most of her works depict childhood and the pleasant, animated activities of children. “Children
always inspire me to create artworks, as they are innocent and pure. And their nature brings the soul to my works.”
Hang has more than 20 collections of art dolls and hundreds of accessories, after four years of work. She is targeting foreign collectors, as she believes that in Vietnam dolls are just for kids. She hopes she can hold an exhibition abroad to promote art doll of Vietnam.
Her room is filled of tools such as hammers, knives and saws. It takes a long time to create a work, from concept and choosing materials. Hang says the art takes hard work , patience, dexterity and meticulous attention.
Many misunderstand art dolls in thinking they are aof kind of sculpture. To Hang, art dolls are a combination of painting and sculpture, as the soul arrives through painting and harmony through the lines of sculpture.
Hang also draws for comic books.
