Cucumber and its leaves can be used to treat certain illnesses
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus), called da chut in the north and da leo in the south, has been widely grown in Vietnam for fruit. The fruit is often eaten fresh when it is unripe, or used for pickling. Although cucumbers are classified as fruits, they are usually perceived, prepared and eaten as vegetables.
In Western medicine, the cucumber is used to purify the blood and dilute uric acid and urate crystals in the blood, which helps prevent and curing gout. It can also be used to lower high blood pressure. The fruit is also a diuretic, a sedative, a fever reliever and an anthelmintic drug.
According to traditional Vietnamese medicine, the cucumber is considered to be sweet and cool, and good for the spleen and stomach. The fruit can be used to relieve fever, detoxify the body and boost urination. It can be eaten fresh, cooked or squeezed for juice to reduce fever, relieve sore throat and treat edema.
Eat 100-200 grams of fresh cucumbers every day with a little sugar or salt to relieve sore throat and quench the thirst.
Cut a cucumber lengthwise and boil it with a little vinegar. Eat the cooked fruit in the morning, on an empty stomach, to cure edema.
To treat dysentery for children, soak young cucumbers with honey and let them eat the fruit during the day until the disease disappears.
Intake of the soup prepared from fresh cucumbers and fresh mã (Plantago asiatica), without roots, can help cure yellow skin and edema.
Slice fresh cucumbers and soak them in rice wine in a tightly closed bottle. To cure burns, apply the solution onto the burns a few times a day.
Cut an old cucumber lengthwise and take out the seeds; add a little sodium sulfate inside the fruit and dry it in the dark. Hold a slice of the dry fruit in the mouth to treat sore throat.
To treat wrinkles, rashes or freckles, cut fresh cucumbers into thin slices and apply these slices onto the affected areas every day.
To detoxify the body, squeeze fresh cucumber leaves and drink the juice.
