Nguyen Thanh My, an overseas Vietnamese, began his chemical factory project in Tra Vinh Province in 2005 after living in Canada for a long time. At first, local government and residents were concerned that the project would harm their health or living conditions and My, director of MyLan Chemicals Inc., had to reassure them with specific explanations. “As a scientist, I know effects of chemicals thoroughly. I and my workers eat and breathe in the air the factory, so I know how to protect our health,” he said.
Located in Long Duc Industrial Park in Tra Vinh Township, MyLan Chemicals Inc. and MyLan Printing Media Corporation are in a white and green building with grass cover, flowers and fruit trees. The main office also has a lake, aquarium and water park designed in combination of ancient and modern architectures to make people feel like they are visiting a resort, according to leaders of the enterprises.
Tran The Tuong, director of the technical and marketing management department of the chemical firm, says the enterprise strictly complies with environment protection regulations. “We pack into boxes all wastes and wastewater and have HCMC-based Green Environment Technology Joint Stock Co. come to collect them. Director My has also supported the partner in transport expenses,” Tuong says.
For the printing enterprise, around 70% of the wastewater is recycled while the remainder is completely treated before being discharged into the environment. My designed the wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 30 cubic meters per hour and ordered local enterprises to build the treatment project at a cost of around VND2 billion. The project has helped the enterprise cut expenses by half compared with that imported from other countries.
The treatment system runs in a closed process to neutralize acid and base compounds and separate clean water. The water is then used to breed fish and serve work in the office, Tuong says. The system with stable operation has helped the enterprise save on water bills for many years.
The management board of MyLan also prioritizes environment and worker health protection along with scientific research and business development. They understand customers also care about the production environment besides other technological criteria.
In addition, the enterprise has attached importance to a green working environment. On its 6.2-hectare campus, they set aside 40% of the land for workshops and dining-rooms and the rest for green trees, gardens, fish ponds, a football yard, tennis court and sports areas. They also provide free sauna, beverages and hair cuts for employees in the dining room.
The 100% Canadian-invested MyLan Chemicals Inc. was established in 2005 and started operating in 2006 to serve the opto-electronic and digital printing sectors. The enterprise produces light emitting polymer, light emitting metal complex, near infrared absorption dye and photoresist.
MyLan has invested over US$11 million in MyLan Printing Media Corporation and is carrying out the US$2.6-million MyLan Opto-materials & Processes Corporation project. The enterprise expects to obtain VND90 billion in export turnover this year.
