Nearly 100 grandmasters from Australia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Georgia, India, Britain, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Ukraine and the host VIetnam will compete with local masters at the HDBank Cup International Open Chess tournament in HCMC from Friday to March 7.

Grandmasters will play nine rounds in line with the Swiss system at the country’s biggest international chess competition this year. Big names such as Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Tu Hoang Thong from Vietnam, Ni Hua from China, Indonesia’s Sukandar Irine Kharisma, India’s Gopal Geetha Narayanan and Georgian Gagunashvile Merab will take part.

The champion will receive US$10,000 with organizers handing out 20 separate awards to the men, three to women and one for the outstanding young competitor.

To launch the big event, the Vietnam Chess Federation collaborated with HDBank to host a contest between budding chess stars and grandmaster Le Quang Liem last week. Twenty players took on Liem but he defeated nineteen with only Vo Tuan Anh, 28, earning a notable draw against the grandmaster.
