HCMC – Defending champions Song Lam Nghe An earned only their fifth V-League victory by crushing leaders Hanoi T&T 6-2 at Hang Day Stadium on Monday while Navibank Saigon beat XM The Vissai Ninh Binh 2-1.
Doubles from Abass Cheikh Dieng and 2011 Silver Ball award winner Nguyen Trong Hoang and goals from Nguyen Hong Viet and Dickson Nwakaeme helped Song Lam move up to fifth place in the table but it was a sore loss to leaders Hanoi, who must be looking nervously over their shoulders now.
They are still three points clear of second-placed Saigon but might look back on this one.
Gonzalo Marronkle and Sammon Kayode were on target for Hanoi in a dismal display.
Song Lam, who were eliminated from the AFC Cup last week, with this victory have rejoined the title race with SHB Danang and Hoang Anh Gia Lai also in with a shout.
Song Lam have 25 points, just one point behind fourth-placed Hoang Anh Gia Lai. Despite the home loss, Hanoi are still in top spot with 33 points.
Meanwhile, Navibank, who also exited the AFC Cup last week, escape from the relegation area with a fifth victory.
National defender Doan Viet Cuong opened for Navibank in the 30th minute and striker Edison Fonseca made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute before striker Sanogo Moussa pulled one back for Ninh Binh but Navibank held on for victory.
Navibank join seventh-placed Hanoi FC and Thanh Hoa on 22 points, while Ninh Binh stay 13th on 18 points, seven points ahead of bottom side Haiphong.
