Colorful Cultural Traits At Festive Event

By Dat Tien

My Homeland Festival, an annual cultural and gastronomic of Van Thanh Tourist Area, is always attractive to guests.
Coming to Van Thanh Tourist Area in HCMC by the middle of this month, visitors will have a chance to discover cultural traits of different parts of Vietnam

A cultural and gastronomic event, which bears the name “My Homeland Festival,” will take place at Van Thanh Tourist Area in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District from 4-9 p.m. on February 10-12.

This year’s event will introduce more characteristic traits of festive activities and the folk gastronomy of Vietnam, said Chiem Thanh Long, head of the organizing board of the event. What makes it different from previous years, he said, is that sections for traditional crafts, country markets and traditional music performances are juxtaposed with gastronomic sections of each region.

Country markets: The country markets are recreated with people in traditional costumes of the country’s northern, central and southern regions. There are also people in traditional costumes of ethnic groups as well as images of the old days’ country markets such as people carrying goods on their head, shoulder or waist to sell around, crying merchandise, and so forth.

Cuisine: The most favorite dishes of the northern, central and southern regions in previous years’ events are served. In particular, the south’s delicious dishes of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Thu Duc are also available. Many specialty dishes are also prepared on the spot.

Artistic performances: There are performances of different forms of folk art such as hát chèo (northern-style traditional opera), Hue-style singing, and n ca tài t Nam b (traditional southern music). Many folk music bands of ethnic groups from the Central Highlands, the south central region province of Ninh Thuan and the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang will perform at the event.

Folk games: There are many folk games for visitors to play. Artisans teach children how to make toys from colored wheat flour, make boats from banana sheaths, make grasshoppers from coconut palm leaves, and knead statues from clay.

Traditional crafts: Visitors will see the display of some traditional crafts such as making baskets, weaving mats, making lanterns, weaving nets, making potteries, weaving brocade, brewing wine, producing rice vermicelli, making rice paper, and so on.
