Sa Dec Flowers In Vivid Colors

A flower farm in Tan Quy Dong Comune, Sa Dec Town, Dong Thap Province
Every year in springtime, Tan Quy Dong flower village in Sa Dec Town becomes more hectic. Locals eagerly tend their flower gardens to provide fresh flowers for big cities, especially HCM City, on the Lunar New Year holidays.

On arrival in Sa Dec Town, Dong Thap Province, tourists will visit Huynh Thuy Le ancient house with its unique combination of western and eastern architecture. They will hear the moving love story of Huynh Thuy Le and Marguerite Duras, which was captured on the famous “The Lover” film. The real love story tells how a French lady named Marguerite met her lover Huynh Thuy Le on a ferry from Sa Dec to Vinh Long. “The Lover” (L’amant) novel by the well-known French writer Marguerite Duras has attracted many international tourists to Sa Dec, in particular the French, who have a great predilection for Sa Dec as they find a connection with this romantic love story.
The tour will continue to Kien An Cung Pagoda, built from 1920 to 1924 for good luck. Huynh Thuy Le also made a notable contribution to the construction of the pagoda. The name of the pagoda comes from the architecture of the roof, in the shape of a bow.

In the evening, tourists will visit Tan Quy Dong flower village, which has been famous for over 100 years. Before 1975, about 200 households in Tan Quy Dong Commune grew bonsai and flowers, which gave rise to Tan Quy Dong flower village. In the 1990s, the flower village was extended to neighboring communes. The total area increased up to 160 hectares and the number of households cultivating bonsai and flowers went up to 1,200. Sa Dec has become the largest flower cultivation area in the Mekong Delta, and a website has been created to introduce over 1,000 species of ornamental flowers and bonsai.

The flower village seems to have four springs. Tourists can enjoy a forest of colorful flowers in any month of the year. Especially, the village features about 50 species of roses. In year-end, various flowers in blossom are carried to HCM City to welcome the Lunar New Year holidays.

Bonsai and flower planting is a traditional trade in Sa Dec. When visiting the flower village, tourists will take a walk on village roads to watch the valuable bonsai that are cared for and shaped by village artisans. In the temperate weather, various flowers such as mai (Ochna harmandii), orchids, daisies, roses and poinsettias in bloom will delight sightseers. They can select their own flower pots at low prices to adorn their houses on Tet holidays.
The tour also includes a trip on the Co Chien River to An Binh Islet and a visit to Vinh Sang Resort to join in bailing water to catch fish and preparing the dish of grilled fish on the spot. In addition, tourists can relax with crocodile fishing and riding ostriches before returning to HCM City.
