Four sixth graders in Phu Yen Province’s Son Hoa District drowned while swimming in the Ba Ha River last Wednesday as the river suddenly swelled, triggered by a full water discharge from the Ba Ha hydropower plant. Once again, innocent lives were lost in an oft-seen tragedy due to flaws that have never been fixed though huge property and human losses have been regularly reported. The repeated tragedy mirrors not only the dereliction of duty of heartless people in charge, but also their deadly incompetence.

The campaign to make District 1 of HCMC become a small-scale Vietnamese version of Singapore announced months ago is losing momentum as the loudly verbal commitment is turning quiet these days. A large-scale environment pollution case is devastating a large swathe of coastal areas these days, as fish farmers in Kien Giang Province are decrying mass deaths of fish, crabs and clams, among others. Fish farms along a 30-kilometer stretch of the coastline from Ha Tien Township to Kien Luong District have reported a loss rate of over 50%, with at least 558 hectares of clam plus innumerable fish farms.

It sounds all reasonable when the Ministry of Construction approves a petition by Dat Lanh Real Estate Company to develop commercial condos measuring at 25 square meters each in HCMC to meet the demand of low-income earners. Such condos, with the cost ranging between VND200 million and VND300 million, have been built in several neighboring provinces such as Binh Duong and Dong Nai, and have been sold out since they are affordable to the poor.
