HCMC - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) will appoint Phan Thanh Hung of V-League club Hanoi T&T as national head coach, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to VFF, Hung will start a four-month contract in August when the V-League season ends. VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said the federation would pay him up to VND200 million (US$10,000) per month.

Hung will be caretaker coach for friendlies against China and Hong Kong next month. Vietnam this year has six friendly matches and the AFF Cup to compete in. The team may also play in West Asia in June or July.

Hung got the nod ahead of talented domestic coaches Le Huynh Duc of SHB Danang and Nguyen Huu Thang of Song Lam Nghe An.

The VFF and National Coaching Council appointed former Navibank Saigon boss Mai Duc Chung as the coach of Vietnam’s Under-23 side last month. Chung will be responsible for training the Under-22 squad to prepare for the qualifying round of the U22 AFC Asian Cup 2013 and the U23 squad for next year’s Southeast Asian Games.

Hung is regarded as one of the best strikers that Vietnam has produced.

He is also a very successful coach. He led Danang U21 side to the 2008 and 2009 U21 Championships.

After taking over Hanoi T&T, Hung has led them to the V-League title in 2010, second place last season and they currently lead this season’s title race.

Thang was an outstanding midfielder for Song Lam Nghe An and the national team. As coach, Thang led Song Lam to the JVC Cup in 2003. In 2009, Thang’s Hanoi T&T team came fourth in the V-League. Before he joined the club, it was bottom of the league. Returning to Song Lam in 2010, he took the team to the V-League title last year.

Duc was a top striker in his playing days. He helped SHB Danang win the V-League title in 2009, their first championship in 17 years.

Hung will replace German coach Falko Goetz, who was not surprisingly fired last December after a dismal performance by the U23 squad at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

Goetz was blasted by football fans nationwide due to Vietnam’s embarrassing fourth place finish in the football event, culminating in a humiliating 4-1 loss to Myanmar in the play-off for third place.

This was after Vietnam, who were drawn in a very easy group, were tipped as possible gold medal winners at the largest regional sporting event.
