308 South Korean engineers arrive at Van Don Airport

HCMC – Some 308 South Korean engineers onboard an Asiana Airlines flight arrived at Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh Province on April 17. They are among the specialists from Samsung Vietnam who have been exempted from centralized quarantine, as agreed by the governments of the two countries.

Earlier, the Vietnamese government agreed to allow 700 engineers from Samsung Display skip the mandatory centralized quarantines required for anyone arriving from South Korea. In granting its exemption, Vietnam has required strict medical supervision for 14 days for the South Korean engineers, who must also provide medical declarations before entering the country.

All of the South Korean engineers were certified as not testing positive for the SAR-CoV-2. After offering medical declarations, they went through a closed service process to avoid impacting normal operations at the airport, and spreading possible infections among airport staff and other passengers.

Medical workers and other staff screened every passenger to detect abnormal cases and fumigated their belongings. As scheduled, they will move to northern Bac Ninh Province, where Samsung Display has its OLED display module factory and work in a separate building to minimize contact with other employees.

Prior to granting the exemption, Vietnamese authorities inspected Samsung’s operations and deemed it sufficient in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

The decision to send the engineers to Vietnam was made to prevent delays in the company’s production schedule. This comes after the South Korean embassy in Vietnam requested that the engineers be exempted from the country’s quarantine procedures when entering the country, if they could provide medical examination reports that proved they did not have the virus.

Since early February, Van Don Airport has received 32 flights carrying nearly 5,000 passengers from virus-hit areas.
