HCMC has 44 old tenements at risk of collapsing

HCMC - The HCMC Department of Construction has said 44 deteriorating tenements in the city are in dangerous condition, so they should be reconstructed before it is too late.

The 44 tenements include the buildings at 11 Vo Van Tan in District 3, 727 Tran Hung Dao, 813 Nguyen Trai, and 01 Dao Tan in District 5, Ngo Gia Tu and An Giang in District 10, Co Giang in District 1, and at 350 Hoang Van Thu and 47 Long Hung in Tan Binh District.

They are the worst among 474 apartment buildings that were constructed in 15 districts of the city before 1975. Around 203 of the total are in District 5.

The department has suggested the city government assign district-level authorities to upgrade and rebuild those shabby tenements. They can approve construction, investment, compensation and resettlement plans as well as pick investors.

In case project owners want to choose investors, they will have to send the names of the investors as well as their compensation and resettlement plans to district authorities for approval.

If the owners cannot choose investors for tenements in dire need of reconstruction within certain periods of time, authorities will make a final decision.

The department plans to rebuild at least half of the 474 old tenements in the city by 2020.
