The Story Of The "Chosen One"

These days, on the site of the Diamond Island project in HCMC’s District 2, the engineers of FDC (the contractor in charge of structuring, finishing and MEP - mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation for the two towers number one and two) are busy giving workers instructions on construction. Every detail is carefully scrutinized - in the distinctive working style of FDC’s “people”.

FDC General Director Ngo Thanh Phong says they have no other choice than to be meticulous and thorough. It is because this is the project FDC does together with Coteccons, a very diligent general contractor, and the project owner, Kusto Home, is also famed for their strict requirements and high standards. “Pressures surround us, and we must devote much more efforts than usual but in return, we’ve discovered our own limits. The thing is, nothing is impossible, as long as you try your best,” he says.

Diamond Island - phase 2 is just one of the many big projects in the real estate market being developed by FDC Investment Construction Joint Stock Company, a name not so well known by the media but very prominent in the construction industry. Other works have been done by FDC include Vinhomes Golden River, The Landmark 81, D’.Capitale, Novotel Hotel, Flamingo Dai Lai Resort, Resort Sol Beach House and BM Windows Factory, etc.

Then, why do the major investors entrust FDC with their projects even though there are quite a few choices of general contractors in the market? Phong believes it is because of the practical values FDC offers investors. FDC is the chosen one, not because they make eloquent statements, but for their actions throughout the collaboration, from discussing the design to finishing the work and operating it for a long time after that. Everything ought to be not only systematic, decent, meticulous and reliable but also novel and creative. Creativity, boldly applying new techniques, helps the contractor save cost and time. Meticulousness and decency make everything perfect and meet the highest requirements and standards. The final result is to benefit the project owner.

FDC believes the relationship between the two sides must be like that between brothers or friends to share “joys and sorrows”, accompany each other in all circumstances, rather than simply sticking to the rigid terms of the contract with only dozens of pages. “I think investors feel secure about assigning FDC a job,” says Phong.

What’s equally important is transparency, which FDC leaders can absolutely guarantee. Transparency has become the culture of FDC, the principle applied at all construction sites and all their divisions. This has broken down the prejudice many people hold against contractors, believing they have the habit of doing tricks with building materials or making false reports... And since it is the culture, all the people working at FDC always adjust and control themselves to match the common values. FDC themselves also seek transparency from their partners and suppliers. The company’s executives regularly meet with their customers and suppliers regularly to listen to their feedback and to keep watch on their “allies”. All information is reference based on the experience of the company’s leadership at construction sites. Perhaps this is the reason why suppliers always favor FDC. FDC’s value comes from the “win-win” relationship the company builds with other contractors. Because of this view, FDC never sees the lowest price as an important criterion in their cooperation agreements with contractors. The principle is the price corresponds to the quality. Thanks to this, the company acquires the resources to perform their job smoothly and quickly. And of course, this is what every investor appreciates.
