The movie Cha cong con (Father and Son) directed and scripted by Vietnamese director Luong Dinh Dung has been selected to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars.

According to the film selection council, the paternal-themed movie has gained the highest vote, surpassing two other nominees – Dao cua dan ngu cu (The Way Station) directed by Vietnamese actress Hong Anh and Sut (Shoot) by director Viet Max, according to local media.

Dung told the Daily in an email interview that he is overwhelmed with joy as his debut production has been chosen to attend the 2018 Oscars.

The movie about the touching story of the paternal love and family values will make a significant contribution to promoting the local cinema industry as well as the country’s culture and people to international friends, Dung added.

Father and Son is adapted from a novel of the same name written in 1995 by Luong Dinh Dung. The movie is a highly emotional story about the life of a boy named Ca (fish) and his poor father who earns a living by catching fish in a river.

The kid always dreams of touching the clouds in the sky as in the stories told by a blind man near his home. However, the boy suffers from an incurable disease and finds that he has no time to wait for magic things to happen to him. But the father tries to fulfill his son’s dream by carrying him on the shoulder to go and see everything the kid wants to see before his death.

The movie with some scenes shot in Ha Giang, Quang Binh and HCMC hit local theaters in early April this year and has heaped praise from local and international spectators with valuable prizes such as Best Foreign Feature and Special July awards for outstanding cinematography at the Arizona International Film Festival 2017, and the Indie Spirit Best Storyline award at the 15th Boston International Film Festival.

Recently, the award-winning movie has secured a ticket at the 21st Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, one of 15 leading film festivals in the world, which is scheduled to take place from November 17 to December 3 in Estonian capital Tallinn, the 44-year-old director said.

The 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 4 next year at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater, according to Reuters.

Launched by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the first time in 1928, the Oscars is touted as Hollywood’s most prestigious film awards ceremony.
